Today was our final day of formal class. We discussed Shaka and The Epic of Shaka with Dr. Hicks, and wrapped up our cultural side of class and what we will do with our time here with Dr. Meekins. For lunch we went to an eastern bazaar and I got the chance o experience Bunny Chow, a delicious meal of Chicken curry within a loaf of bread. It was delicious and spicy.

After lunch we made our way to the District 6 Museum. As far as museums go, I have to say this was probably my favorite. It was beautifully put together and I feel like even if I went there 10 times I would still learn something new. The District 6 Museum is dedicated to those who lost their homes during the reign of Apartheid, namely those in District 6, one of the most vibrant parts of Cape Town before people were forcibly removed and the district was demolished. The purpose of this was to stop the intermingling of Blacks, colored and whites. After the removal of any non-white persons, the area was then able to be given to white residents and the agenda of making Cape Town a white town was closer in achievement.

The museum was a sobering experience, much like the slave lodge, but this time the event was so much closer to the present. They even had testimonies of people removed from their home who were still alive today. I honestly can say that I don’t understand or comprehend why or how people could do this to others. Your home is your safe place, at least mine is, and to have that taken away is abhorrent.
After the District 6 Museum, our travel took us to the Rhodes Memorial, something that the students of UCT (University of Cape Town) have been trying to get taken down due to the history that Cecil Rhodes represents.

Back at home we started writing our papers, trying to get more homework done and preparing to pack for Friday’s departure. I can’t believe how fast time flew. I miss home a lot and I am excited for leadership week and welcoming new students on campus, but I’m really going to miss this beautiful place.
