//Tuesday 8.15.17//

Well, I don’t have many photos from today but that just means I was too busy being present and invested in what was going on around me.

Our morning consisted of class time discussing Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. It was so interesting reading and discussing a work of fiction that was meant to preserve a dying culture and to combat the misrepresented African culture. It was especially interesting to me because Achebe’s work was also meant to combat Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, which I recently read for my British Lit class this spring.

After lunch we made a quick stop at the mall and sent about an hour and a half walking around, grabbing some more things for people back home (I may or may not have bought some Kinder chocolate bars which my family LOVED eating in Italy. Sadly I still have not found the hippo candies we also enjoyed as kids). I also was able to grab some ice cream (I have been having the strangest cravings while here and ice cram was at the top, unfortunately there is no Manning’s in this country) and Carleigh and I had the chance to sit down and grab some coffee and a croissant (a latte for her and a hazelnut frappe for myself).

Let me just say something about Carleigh- she has become a vital part of my time here. I had the chance to get to know her a little bit in the Dorm and then more as I worked with her at the school, but I think that I can honestly say that our friendship has gone to a new level while in Africa. She has so many funny comments and moments and she is also so thoughtful and kind. It was nice to spend moments with her studying or walking around places and chat about our futures, the things we are passionate about, and our thoughts about the trip and the things we are learning. Needless to say, I really appreciate her.

Tonight we had a speaker come and talk wth us about the Bible as Literature and the tensions we have when trying to read the Bible from the different approaches we have reading for academia, personal devotions, historically, etc.). It was really neat and interesting, especially when he talked about words creating worlds and the power of scripture. One things for sure, I read my bible a little differently the next morning!
