“I have one great fear in my heart, that one day when they are turned to loving, they will find that we are turned to hating.” ― Alan Paton, Cry, The Beloved Country

Well, it is officially one month until I fly off to South Africa. I can't believe it's so close. I just finished two assignments that were due before the trip and purchased all the books for the classes I will be taking while over there. Now comes the hard part- going to appointments, figuring out what to bring, reading, and packing! I just watched "Cry, The Beloved Country" as one of the pre-course assignments and let me tell you, that was a very eye-opening and sobering movie to watch. I'd be lying if I said that the movie didn't make me a tad bit hesitant to explore and see South Africa, but I have to keep in mind that the story took place at least fifty years ago and while the issue of race is still present, times have changed. I also read about how to be a leader who has cultural intelligence, and that made me see that I may think I have it all figured out when it comes to cultural interactions, but there is always something else that can be learned.

I'm getting more and more excited as I look at pictures of South African markets, beaches, and wildlife and I am even more excited as I think about who will be sharing this amazing experience with me! I hope to post a couple more blog posts before I leave so stay tuned as the trip approaches!
