Happy Women’s Day!
Today was a national holiday here in South Africa. Due to almost everything being shut down for the holiday and the ridiculous amount of traffic, Dr. Hicks had us stay at Safe Haven for class this morning and even let us wear sweatpants and a comfy t-shirt! We had a delicious breakfast and got to talk with Tony and Julie for a little while. At 9:30 we started class in the lounge and then moved to the dining table to work on a timeline.

After that we had a brief break and then sat down and discussed Cry, The Beloved Country by Alan Paton. The novel itself was a very easy read as far as being able to connect to the story. If you haven’t read it, I will give you a short summary- a black priest who lives in a village travels to Johannesburg (one of the biggest cities in South Africa) to find his sister and son. While there he finds out his son has committed a crime and he has to come face to face with the sins, issues, and problems in his country. The story focuses on themes of deterioration of a culture, family relationships, and racial issues.
Around 1:00 we had lunch and got ready for beach time. Five of us walked down to the beach and got to sit in the sun, sand and take in the beautiful view. The water was cold, but not cold enough to deter us from getting in thigh-deep. On our walk back I realized I had forgotten my water bottle (like the absent-minded person I am) and had to walk back to get it. When we actually decided to head back, we saw this guy just swimming along, doing lazy spirals in the water.

The rest of the day consisted of doing homework, eating, devotions and then doing more homework. We saw some more whales (I didn’t get any photos sadly) and shared random stories about ourselves ( I told them how I forced two friendships, and how both of the girls turned out to be my two best friends).

We are trying to conserve wifi, so I will be posting a couple days at a time so as not to use too much data.
